The Science of Cannabis

The cannabis plant contains a number of chemical compounds called cannabinoids. When consumed, these cannabinoids stimulate receptors (cb-1 and cb-2) in our cells throughout the brain and body. The two most well-known cannabinoids are THC and CBD.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

THC is responsible for the “high” or “stoned” feeling reported by patients when consuming cannabis. It has been shown to be particularly effective in mitigating pain, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting and muscle spasticity. It can also help to relieve intraocular pressure in patients with glaucoma. Recent studies suggest that THC may be useful in managing insomnia, fatigue, PTSD and depression.

CBD (cannabidiol)

CBD is non-psychoactive which makes it an appealing treatment option for patients seeking anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-spasmodic and/or pain-relieving effects without the “stoned” feelings associated with marijuana. Studies suggest that CBD may useful in managing Parkin- son’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral ischemia, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, nausea and cancer.

Strains

Indica strains tend to be more relaxing, sedating and full-body. Indica strains are o en used for anxiety, stress, insomnia, muscle spasms and pain.

Sativa strains tend to be more cerebral, upli ing and creative. Sativas are o en used for depression, ADD, fatigue and mood disorders.

Hybrid strains have a combination of Indica and Sativa plant strains. Hybrids can be Indica dominant, Sativa domi- nant, or balanced.

Medical Conditions & Symptoms

Including THC and CBD, cannabis contains at least 85 types of cannabinoids, many of which have documented medical value. Products and strains have been developed to deliver larger doses of different cannabinoids. The effectiveness of cannabinoids is being studied for the following conditions and symptoms:
